Current & Past Instructors
Randy Bernklau
Randy has been a technician for over twenty-five years and an instructor for in-service technicians for ten years. Randy's most notable classes have been the series of "Ultimate OBD II" seminars that studied live vehicles within a university laboratory environment using FTP, ASM and IM240 equipment and drive cycles. This helped advanced level technicians and instructors determine the real strategies and causes of OBD related DTC's.
Randy is also well known for articles appearing in national trade magazines such as “Import Service” and “Motor.” Extensive industry contacts, access to laboratory research equipment and material, and his practical, real-world approach to repairing modern cars, have made him a popular instructor among technicians.
Jonathan Riggle
Jon is well known for his moderator position on iATN where he conducts live, online meetings for technicians around the world. Jon has been involved in training in the Arizona area for many years and has also traveled throughout the USA conducting OBD related classes. He has reached thousands of technicians with his beginning to advanced level of classes. Jon and Randy first worked together in 2003 where they presented a class for Colorado ASA on advanced OBD II systems. Jon started as a technician and became well known for his advanced diagnostic techniques.
Chris Chesney
Chris is the Director of Training for the CARQUEST Technical Institute (CTI) headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina. However, Chris’s knowledge and expertise has its roots in his experiences as a working technician, shop owner, and local instructor in the Denver area. His DTEC educational company trained thousands of technicians all over Colorado and neighboring states.
Chris has never lost touch with his technician roots and always brings cutting-edge technology and information to the working technician.
Jim Kemper
Jim started his career as a technician before moving into training in-service technicians in the late 1980's. Jim is most well known for his work at National Center for Vehicle Emissions Control and Safety (NCVECS) located at Colorado State University. While at NCVECS he traveled throughout the USA and Mexico providing emission related training to all levels of technicians. Many innovative techniques were developed at NCVECS and are still in use today.
Jim was not only involved in training at NCVECS but also participated in many research projects related to automotive emissions systems and inspection and maintenance programs. His career has continued in this direction where he currently works as a technical liaison between the repair industry and the Colorado Department of Health. Jim continues to teach in various capacities and we are fortunate to have him with us.
Mike McCarthy
Mike McCarthy has been with California Air Resource Board (CARB) since the early 1990's. His job has put him at the forefront of OBD II. Mike has seen, first hand, all the regulations that have come about that govern what the OE's must do when it comes to OBD implementation.
Mike has been heavily involved in regulation writing and research. He has participated in the development of many projects including; aftermarket catalytic converter certification for California, Controller Area Network (CAN) OBD II generic protocol, Mode $06 standards including the new standards for CAN, and the incorporation of OBD II into Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) programs. In short, Mike “wrote the book” on OBD II
